Ultrafabrics takes pride in prioritizing sustainability and responsible manufacturing to minimize environmental and health risks. Their polyurethane-coated fabrics are free from PVC, plasticizer phthalates, and formaldehyde, which are often found in other alternatives like vinyl and pose environmental risks and health hazards. Their proprietary Takumi™ manufacturing technology — named after the Japanese word for artisan — combines craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology, and sustainable innovation to create durable, high-comfort polyurethane-coated fabrics.
Ultrafabrics believes in the power of change and have reached their sustainable materials goal a full year ahead of a 2025 target – a testament to their dedication to sustainable innovation. Today, all Ultrafabrics branded products sold to furniture, healthcare, recreational vehicle, marine, aviation, and accessories markets contain at least 50% environmentally preferred materials.
Ultrafabrics’ collections have been transformed, aligning with a mission to provide products that are not only luxurious but also consciously crafted. 100% Rapidly renewable backcloths are showcased in collections like the iconic Ultraleather, which includes FSC/PEFC-certified rayon. Renewable materials can be replenished at a rate equal to or greater than the rate of depletion and are typically agricultural and forestry products with a harvest cycle of 10 years or less. The wood inputs for the FSC/PEFC-certified rayon used are derived from beech wood sourced from responsibly managed forests, providing a testament to the dedication to environmental stewardship.
In their Brisa, Promessa, and Coast collections, Ultrafabrics now features FSC/PEFC certified rayon with recycled polyester in the backcloth. This innovative approach delivers products with less impact without compromising the high-quality standards Ultrafabrics is known for. Each yard of fabric repurposes approximately 8.3 plastic bottles, preventing them from polluting our precious waters. The wood inputs used to produce FSC/PEFC certified rayon fibers are sourced from certified and controlled sources that meet strict sustainability requirements to ensure ancient and endangered forests are protected.
Introduced in 2019, the Volar Bio collection exemplifies a journey towards sustainability, and now features a 66% mix of recycled, rapidly renewable, and biobased content. Including materials like recycled polyester, FSC/PEFC certified rayon, and Susterra® propanediol biobased resin, Ultrafabrics is pioneering creating alternatives that are kinder to the planet.
As they embrace this new chapter, Ultrafabrics is ensuring that their signature performance and quality are unwavering. The new backcloths are designed to maintain the strength, durability, and comfort that our customers expect from Ultrafabrics, while actively reducing our environmental footprint.
Ultrafabrics believes there is beauty in balance, and that one should never compromise on performance, comfort, or sustainability. It’s this perspective that has inspired their work since 1999. The approach centers on reducing environmental impact and carbon emissions, advancing material innovation and circularity, and promoting safer chemistry—driving positive change and moving all toward a more sustainable future.
