Helix™: Reimagining Polyurethane and a Whole Category of Chairs
In the past, the most cleanable chairs have also been the most uncomfortable. On top of that, they have been the most uninspiring when it comes to design and aesthetics. We wanted to reimagine what a highly cleanable chair could be by exploring the capabilities of polyurethane.
“We were driven by improving the performance of that product, but through simplicity – not through complexity,” explains Jean-Francois Gomrée, industrial designer. “We did not reinvent the [materials] – we used the same ingredients but combined them differently.”
Polyurethane is incredibly cleanable and durable, which is why it’s a popular material commonly used for seating solutions in sensitive environments, such as labs and hospitals. However, another strong quality that polyurethane possesses is that it’s inherently pliable. Through extensive research, our design team created a patented system to utilize polyurethane in a nontraditional way. Instead of simply using it as a textile covering, why not take full advantage of its flexible capabilities and use it as a comfortable and supportive material for the human body?
“By freeing up the polyurethane, combined with the use of a thermoplastic elastomer and the flexing upright, we created a back system that can twist and move organically allowing the user to move more naturally unencumbered by the chair,” says Kyle Waggoner, Design Director for Cramer.
The result is Helix, a chair that embraces the human form effortlessly and is made of our i+™ Polyurethane. The fluid twisting motion of the Frameless Back™ is unique to the market and provides a new level of support. This comfort system self-adapts organically to the user, requiring only a single adjustment handle to control height, making Helix a perfect solution for sensitive environments or shared seating applications.
